The game takes place on a vast island that never changes. All biomes, bosses, and the paths between them are present from the start. Reaching them is a completely different story...
However, in Dead Cells, death replaces the traditional escape mechanic of a Metroidvania. Initially, you will encounter seemingly inaccessible areas, but the answers to these mysteries will emerge as you explore the island. Be it a key, a new acrobatic skill, or a forgotten spell, the knowledge you gain will stay with you, allowing you to discover new paths to your goal. Tired of the stinking sewers? Climb the fortress wall and get some fresh air! Your skill, playstyle, and, of course, the loot you find will shape your path.
Furthermore, as the term "Roguelike" might (and not so) subtly imply, we were also heavily influenced by the recent wave of roguelites. Without checkpoints to save you from failure, the adrenaline rush is off the charts. And when you lose, you lose big, so you need to survive. Instead of relying on the classic formula of memorizing level designs and enemy placements, procedural generation allows us to reward your instincts, reflexes, and ability to adapt to changing situations.
We recognize that the words "procedural generation" conjure up images of shoddy levels and uninteresting gameplay for many gamers. Therefore, we opted for a hybrid solution, where each launch presents a series of carefully crafted level "fragments." The idea is to give you the feeling of a handcrafted world while providing a fresh experience every time.
However, don´t expect it to be a walk in the park. Template-based monsters and challenging boss fights will teach you how to choose your battles and build your strength. Each weapon has its own unique feel, and dodging and rolling will become second nature as you learn to control hordes of monsters that will overwhelm the unprepared. We strive for "tough, but fair."

Thomas and Gwen, our graphic artists, never miss an opportunity to impress with their pixel art and create a world worth exploring.
