As the globe warms, Arctic ice is retreating, turning the frozen Siberian coast into the next great global shipping route. Ships passing through the Northern Sea Route (NSR) from Shanghai to Copenhagen travel only 1/3 of the old distance and avoid strategic bottlenecks such as the Suez Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar. It is in this new, melting theater that the Russian president and the Ministry of Defense see a way to restore national pride, a theater that most Westerners feel comfortable dropping out of their cards. Investments and military construction are being initiated, turning this barren sea route into an Arctic kill zone, prompting the Russian parliament to declare that their laws regarding this new waterway replace the United Nations law of the sea. In response, the US president and the Canadian prime ministers decide to challenge Russia´s claims in the region. In Showcase: Icebreakers, you will lead a freedom of navigation operation in one of the most inhospitable climates on earth, beyond the Arctic Circle. Polar Star, an icebreaker capable of breaking through sea ice, leads the fleet. It is followed by several Allied surface combat groups, including the destroyers Zumwalt and Arleigh Burke, as well as patrol ships Harry DeWolf and others. Although there is no aircraft carrier in the fleet, you will be supported by Air Force units stationed in Alaska. Information is ammunition, and with active Russian satellites, you´ll need all the help you can get to control the flow of information. US CYBERCOM has prepared an attack package codenamed "Widowmaker" that will help deal with Russian satellites. War has not been declared, but hostilities may begin at any moment. The Russian response to your actions will change dynamically depending on the level of hostility you display. This is made possible by our new "Road to War" scenario, which simulates a gradual escalation from harassment and skirmishes to open warfare.
