The beautiful Mon Line, a rural railroad through the heart of Pennsylvania, USA, is now available as a route in Train Simulator, featuring mile-long coal trains and an unusual section of railroad track running right through a city street.

The Monongahela Railroad was originally a joint venture between the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE). The two companies acquired many lines in the area in the early 1900s, and by 1930, the Monongahela route (‘the Mon Line’) had a total length of over 170 miles, serving numerous coal mines.

Located in Pennsylvania’s coal country, the line is now owned by Norfolk Southern, but CSX Transportation also has rights to use the tracks. The route includes several coal mines, the largest of which, Bailey Mine and Emerald Mine, are connected by rail to a freight yard in West Brownsville, where coal trains continue on to power plants or ports for export.

The line carries about 20 million tons of coal annually, much of which is then loaded onto river barges. The main portion of the route consists of four branches: Manor, Ten Mile Run, West Brownsville, and Loveridge. In addition, the route includes a section where cars are forced to share a section of Main Street in West Brownsville with full-size freight trains.

The profile of the route is relatively flat, as the road follows the Monongahela River to Millsboro, then along Mile Creek to Waynesburg Station and the Emerald Mine. The route then turns northeast, following the curves of Browns Creek. The final 15 miles pass through truly pristine wilderness before ending at the Bailey Mine roundabout, where the coal mining district ends.

The route includes the 50-mile Bailey Mine to West Brownsville section and the GE Evolution Series ES44AC in Norfolk Southern livery. The locomotive has 4,000 horsepower and a top speed of 75 mph, making it the perfect locomotive for pulling long coal trains on the Mon Line.

You can load your own coal into cars using the working loading facilities at Bailey Mine and Emerald Mine, then put your train driving experience to good use as you follow the Monongahela River branch line, which includes scrap yards north of Brownsville, a barge repair yard and construction yard to the south, and a transfer yard in Alicia.
