Description:
A picturesque island railway crossing the Rugen hills between Stralsund and Sassnitz has appeared in Train Simulator. In the 1860s, iron rails spread rapidly throughout Germany, including the rails of the Angermunde-Stralsund railway, which was built to reduce travel time between the north of the country and Sweden. However, it was possible to lay the rails even closer to the border with the Baltic, on the island of Rügen. It was not until 1883 that the railway was built on the island of Rügen. Initially, it stretched to Bergen-auf-Rügen, and 8 years later it was extended to the northern coast of the island in Sassnitz. However, there was no fixed crossing with the mainland at this stage, instead the body of water known as Strehlasund was crossed by ferry. As Germany and Sweden became closer and closer, the popularity of the ferry service grew steadily. Mail crossed borders through Rügen faster than ever before, and eventually a rail ferry was set up between the two countries to bring them even closer together. The success of the ferry required closer communication with the mainland, and in the 1930s a bridge over the Strelasund was built. The island railway brought benefits not only to Sassnitz and Sweden, the coastal town of Binz was also covered by a single-track branch line from Litsov, and today it serves as an equally important destination, where every second train stops. After electrification and the fall of the Iron Curtain, Rugen became something of a resort and was called "Brighton for Berliners" by those who got acquainted with its Baltic coast; and what could be better for a summer vacation than a scenic railway! Inselbahn: Stralsund - Sassnitz brings to life both the passenger and freight flavor of island rail transportation!
