Description:
The longest heritage railway in the UK is coming to life in a wonderful addition to the West Somerset Railway route for Train Simulator, available now. The origins of what is now one of the favorite preserved railways for enthusiasts date back to the mid-1800s, when several proposals for railway schemes in West Somerset were submitted; however, none of these proposals were implemented, and another ten years passed before proposals for the construction of a railway in the county. they were introduced again. Under the leadership of Isambar King Brunel, a former engineer with the nearby Bristol and Exeter Railway (B&ER), a construction scheme for the West Somerset Railway was presented. Opened on March 31, 1862 for passenger traffic, the line became an important route for vacationers heading to the sea, as well as transporting coal and iron ore from the mines and ports of Somerset. Over time, bypass tracks and extended platforms were added to manage the increasing number of passengers and freight operations, and in 1882 the line was upgraded from broad gauge to standard gauge. However, despite the opening of the Butlins Holiday Camp at Minehead in 1962, the line was recommended for closure in the 1962 British Railways Recycling Report, and the last passenger service ran on January 2, 1971. Just a month after the closure, a working group was appointed to reopen the line as a private railway, so important to the tourism industry. With the support of Somerset County Council and the Minehead Railway Preservation Society, the line reopened as a heritage railway on March 28, 1976, between Minehead and Blue Shore, and three years later to Bishops Lyder. At 20 miles long, this line is the longest standard gauge heritage railway in the UK, passing through some of Somerset´s most scenic landscapes. The line is also popular with enthusiasts and railway fans due to its permanent line-up of GWR and S&DJR locomotives, as well as regular visiting locomotives on railway tours or for holidays. Starting at the waterfront in Minehead, the line heads southeast along the coast to Dunster and Watchet before heading inland to Williton, where the oldest signal house on the line stands. Rising from Williton along the side of the Quancock Hills — from where passengers can enjoy stunning views of the Somerset countryside — the line reaches its summit at Crokeam Heathfield before descending a steep 1 in 81 incline to Bishop´s Liner. In addition to the route, three of the railway´s most popular locomotives are included: Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway Class 7F locomotive No. 88, GWR Hall class locomotive Raveningham Hall, and BR Green 33 class locomotive D6575. These locomotives are accompanied by the corresponding BR Mk1 wagons and GWR/BR freight wagons.
