There is a horizontal parallel beam of elliptically polarized light. It was discovered that when a beam passes through a plate in l/4 at a certain orientation, the light turns out to be linearly polarized at an angle a1 = 23° to the vertical. If the plate is rotated through an angle of 90°, then all the light again turns out to be linearly polarized at an angle a2 = 83° to the vertical. Find the ratio a/b of the semi-axes of the polarization ellipse and the angle j of the major axis.
